Crochet Seed Stitch Purse – Free Crochet Pattern

This purse measures about 8 inches long, by 3 inches wide, by 5 inches tall (not including the straps).
Crochet Seed Stitch Purse (sized for a young girl)

Materials:

Hook: G 4.25 mm (this is very important so the weave is tight and things won’t fall through the purse)
Yarn: Worsted Weight (medium, 4). I used Red Heart Super Saver because it’s cheap and strong. I used [amazon_link id=”B00281QFCG” target=”_blank” ]Aruba Sea[/amazon_link], [amazon_link id=”B0050FIDZE” target=”_blank” ]Perfect Pink[/amazon_link], Light Coral and [amazon_link id=”B000XZW3JS” target=”_blank” ]Medium Purple[/amazon_link].
Tapestry needle to sew in ends & purse handles
Note: work in just the two top loops of the HDC spaces – this leaves a one piece of yarn in the space which makes the weave tighter to be able to hold things better in the purse.

Abbreviations:
CH = chain
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
HDC = half double crochet
FC = foundation chain
SL ST = slip stitch
Rnd = round
FHDC = foundation half double crochet
ST = stitch
Sk = skip
Sp = space

Pattern

First, work a loose foundation chain of 20 HDC stitches. I provided a tutorial on another post, complete with pictures.

Turn your work over 180 degrees. Work 3 HDC back into the last FHDC (increasing stitch).

Round 1

Work 1 HDC in each FHDC sp across (total of 19).
Work 3 HDC in the last FHDC (working the SL ST into the HDC to hide it) (increasing stitch).

Then, work 3 HDC’s in the next chain on the other side (increasing stitch).
Work 1 HDC in each FHDC sp across (total of 19)
3 HDC in next HDC space (increasing stitch)
Join with SL ST, then CH 1 (you might want a stitch marker here as this CH 1 is hard to see as the beginning of the round. If you CH 2, it creates too big of a hole).

Round 2

1 HDC in next HDC sp
3 HDC in next HDC sp (increasing stitch)
Work 1 HDC in each stitch across (total of 20)
Curve

3 HDC in the next HDC sp (worked in the 1st sp of the increasing st)
1 HDC in each of the next 5 sp
3 HDC in next HDC sp (increasing stitch)
Work 1 HDC in each stitch across (total of 20)
Curve

3 HDC in next sp (also worked in the 1st sp of the 3 HDC increasing st)
1 HDC in each of the next 2 spaces
SK the last two spaces
Join with a SL ST, CH 1

You’ve now completed the base of the purse and will no longer continue to increase, if making the purse for a little girl. If you would like the purse to be larger, just continue around by adding 1 extra stitch on the sides, and 1 extra HDC each time after you work the 3 HDC increase stitches (on the curve). For example – the next side would be 21HDC across, then 3 HDC in the next stitch, then 1 HDC in each of the next 6 spaces. The next side would be 22 HDC across, then 3 HDC in the next stitch, then 1 HDC in each of the next 3 stitches, join to the beginning with a SL ST. CH 1, then 1 HDC in each of the next 2 spaces (so a total of 5 HDCs in between each of the increasing 3 HDCs)

Round 3 – Begin the Seed Stitch

In the next space (not the one where you worked the CH 2), work a seed stitch – 1 SC, then 1 DC.
*Sk 1 HDC space.
1 SC, 1 DC in next space*
Repeat from * around to the beginning CH 2.

To make the purse really neat and tidy, I came up with two different ways to end the rounds. One is if you’re changing colors and fastening off, and another is if you’re keeping the same color.

To Start a New Color

Finish the last round by joining with a SL ST to the beginning CH 2 & fasten off. Then, on the other side of the purse, join in a HDC space with a SL ST.
CH 2
Work a seed stitch in the next space (1 SC, 1 DC)

Keep the same color: then work a SC in the SAME HDC space as the CH 2.

Then, join to the CH 2 with a SL ST, then CH 1 (counts as first SC).

Then, work a DC in same space (so this is the first seed stitch of the next round)

Straps
The straps are just simple rows of SC. I chained a row of 50 in pink, then did 49 SC across. Then I took the Aruba Sea color and started a new row on the pink, and continued on the other side of the pink without fastening off so I’d have less yarn to sew in later.

Puff Stitch at the Top

On one of the sides of the purse, join the yarn on the inside of the purse with a SL ST and CH 1. (you will be working on the inside of the purse so the finished puff stitch faces the outside).
In the next space, work a puff stitch (YO pull the yarn through 3xs, until you have 7 loops on the hook. YO and pull through all 7 loops.)
CH 1
Work a SL ST in the next space.
Sew in all your ends and you’re done!
